Meesapulimala Trek Permit and KFDC Booking: Rules, Documents and Cost
You cannot simply drive to Meesapulimala and start walking. The peak sits in forest land managed by the Kerala Forest Development Corporation (KFDC), and every trekker needs a booked slot and a KFDC forest guide. Who manages the Meesapulimala trek?
Meesapulimala is managed by KFDC through KFDC Ecotourism, Munnar. Entry is tied to KFDC trek and stay programmes: a day trek, or an overnight stay at the base camp tents, Rhodo Mansion or Sky Cottage. Each programme has its own capacity, and the trek always runs with a forest guide. There is no separate walk-in permit.
How to book the Meesapulimala trek
Option 1: Book directly with KFDC
- KFDC lists its eco-tourism programmes on its official website, kfdcecotourism.com.
- The KFDC Ecotourism office is on Mattupetty Road, Munnar. KFDC lists its Munnar helpline as +91 82898 21408, and more details are on the Kerala Tourism trekking page.
- Jeeps from Munnar to base camp are often arranged separately. Confirm this when you book.
Option 2: Book through an organiser
An organiser books the KFDC slot, arranges the jeep, briefs your group and sends a trek lead along with the forest guide. You pay one price and have one contact. This is what we do at KeralaTrekking. Note that organisers are not KFDC: we book KFDC programmes on your behalf.
When to book
- Book two to three weeks ahead for weekends.
- November, December, Christmas, New Year and long weekends fill first.
- Secure the trek slot before you book hotels or travel, because slots are the bottleneck.

What the permit and package usually include
Kerala Tourism lists guide service and meals (breakfast, lunch, evening tea and dinner) with KFDC trek and stay packages, and a campfire at base camp. What is usually extra depends on who you book with:
- Usually included: KFDC entry, forest guide, stay on overnight plans and meals at camp
- Often separate: The 4×4 jeep from Munnar, which is charged per vehicle and shared by a small group
- Not included: Travel to Munnar, your hotel in Munnar the night before, personal gear and snacks
How much does the Meesapulimala trek cost?
The total depends on three things: the KFDC programme you choose (tent, Rhodo Mansion or Sky Cottage), the jeep, and whether an organiser runs the trip for you. Cottages and very small groups cost more because the jeep is shared by fewer people. Documents to carry
- An original government photo ID for every adult.
- ID for minors, who must travel with a parent or guardian.
- Names and ID details shared with your organiser in advance, since slots are issued per person.
Forest rules you agree to
- Trek only with the assigned forest guide and follow their instructions on route and timing.
- No alcohol, smoking or drugs inside the forest.
- No single-use plastic left behind. Carry all waste back down.
- No loud music or shouting, and no drones without permission.
- No fires except where the camp allows them.
- Stay on the trail and keep well away from wildlife.
- Do not pick or damage Neelakurinji or any other plant.
- The guide can turn a group back for weather or safety. That call is final.
Weather, closures and cancellations
KFDC can cancel or postpone treks at short notice for heavy rain, wind, fire risk or other forest reasons, and treks may be suspended during the June to August monsoon. Before you pay anyone, ask two questions and get the answers in writing: what happens if KFDC cancels, and what happens if you cancel.
Age and health
The summit day is long, so organisers usually set a minimum age for it, and KFDC can refuse entry in bad weather. If you have a heart, lung or joint condition, check with your doctor first and tell your organiser while booking.
