Best Treks Near Thrissur: 5 Forest Trails to Try

Best treks near Thrissur – forest stream in Peechi–Vazhani Wildlife Sanctuary

The best treks near Thrissur are all within a two-hour drive of the city: the Peechi Moodalmala trail inside Peechi–Vazhani Wildlife Sanctuary, the forest walks of Chimmini Wildlife Sanctuary, and the longer, tougher forest trek around Athirappilly. Each one is a guided, forest-department-controlled route, so you cannot simply turn up and walk. This guide covers distance, difficulty, best season, how to reach and what to carry for each, so you can pick the right one-day trek from Thrissur.

Why Thrissur is a good base for forest treks

Thrissur sits right at the foot of the Western Ghats. East of the city, Peechi–Vazhani Wildlife Sanctuary (declared in 1958 and covering about 125 sq km) joins Chimmini Wildlife Sanctuary (declared in 1984, about 85 sq km) on the western slopes of the Nelliyampathy Hills. To the south-east, the Vazhachal forests surround Athirappilly. That means evergreen and moist deciduous forest, elephants, gaur and a long list of birds and butterflies, all close enough for a day trip with a 5 am start.

The trade-off is that these are protected forests. Treks run only on approved routes, with a forest guide, and they can be closed at short notice for weather or wildlife movement. If you are new to this, our beginner’s guide to trekking in Kerala explains how guided forest treks work.

Distances are approximate trail lengths for the routes KeralaTrekking runs, and can change depending on the route the forest guide uses on the day.

1. Peechi Moodalmala Trek (Peechi–Vazhani Wildlife Sanctuary)

Peechi is the closest of the three forest areas – Kerala Tourism puts the sanctuary about 20 km east of Thrissur. The Moodalmala trail covers roughly 12 km through dense forest and open grassland before reaching Moodalmala peak, which looks out over the Peechi reservoir and the surrounding hills.

  • Distance: about 12 km
  • Difficulty: easy to moderate; steady climbs, long but not technical
  • Good for: first-timers who are reasonably fit and want a proper summit
  • Wildlife: the sanctuary records gaur, elephants, deer species and over 60 bird species
  • After the trek: Peechi Dam, with an optional coracle (bowl boat) ride at extra cost

KeralaTrekking runs this as a guided day trek from Thrissur Railway Station, with transport, meals, the forest entry permit and guide charges included. See dates and inclusions on the Peechi Moodalmala Trek page.

2. Chimmini Wildlife Sanctuary treks

Chimmini (also spelt Chimmony) is quieter than Peechi and feels more remote. The sanctuary headquarters at Echippara is about 40 km from Thrissur. The usual road approach is via Amballur on the Thrissur–Ernakulam highway, turning off towards Varantharappilly and Palappilly. Kerala Tourism lists elephants, gaur, sambar, sloth bears and around 192 bird species here, and notes that November and December are the best months for its forest trek.

There are three ways to trek Chimmini with KeralaTrekking, depending on how much walking you want.

Choorathala Trek – about 5 km

The shortest option and the easiest introduction to forest trekking near Thrissur. It suits families with older children, first-timers and anyone who wants time at Chimmini Dam afterwards. A coracle (kutta vanji) ride on the reservoir can be added at your own cost. Details are on the Choorathala Trek page.

Amphi Trek – about 9 km

A middle-distance route with more time under the canopy, and the coracle ride on Chimmini Dam is included. A good step up once you have done one or two short treks. See the Chimmini Amphi Trek page.

Climate Walk – about 13 km

The longest walk in Chimmini, through dense evergreen patches and along forest streams. Still rated easy to moderate, but 13 km in humid forest is a full day, so you need decent stamina. Book through the Chimmini Climate Walk page.

3. Athirappilly Waterfall Trek (Vazhachal Forest Division)

Most people see Athirappilly from the roadside viewpoint. The forest trek is a different experience: a hard walk of about 9 km that takes around 8 hours, viewing the falls from the opposite side, with a stop at the Nadukani viewpoint and one of the largest natural teak trees in the forest. Athirappilly is about 63 km from Thrissur and about 30 km from Chalakudy, according to Kerala Tourism.

  • First trek ever, or with older kids: Choorathala (Chimmini, about 5 km).
  • Some fitness, want a summit view: Peechi Moodalmala (about 12 km).

  • Want a mix of trail and water: Chimmini Amphi Trek with the coracle ride.
  • Experienced and fit: Athirappilly Waterfall Trek.

Best time for trekking near Thrissur

The post-monsoon months, roughly October to February, are the most comfortable. The forest is still green, streams are flowing, and mornings are cooler. Expect afternoon showers in October and November from the northeast monsoon, so plan to be off the trail by early afternoon. From March to May the lowland forest gets hot and dry; start early or choose a shorter route. During the southwest monsoon (June to September) the forest is at its most dramatic, but leeches, slippery rock and sudden closures are common. Our guide to the best time to trek in Kerala covers each season in more detail.

How to reach the trailheads

  • By train: Thrissur Railway Station is the easiest meeting point; KeralaTrekking’s Thrissur treks report there early in the morning, usually between 5:15 am and 7:30 am depending on the route.
  • By air: Cochin International Airport is the nearest airport. Reach Thrissur the night before for an early start.
  • By road: Peechi is reached directly east of Thrissur town; Chimmini via Amballur and Palappilly; Athirappilly via Chalakudy. Public transport to the trailheads is limited, especially at dawn, so shared group transport is usually the practical choice.

Permits, fees and forest rules

All of these treks are inside protected forest and run with forest department guides. Entry and trekking fees are set by the forest department and change from time to time. As an example, Kerala Tourism lists the Athirappilly–Vazhachal entrance fee at ₹30 for an Indian adult and ₹100 for a foreign visitor. On KeralaTrekking’s Thrissur treks, the forest entry permit, trekking fee and guide charges are included in the trek price. For the wider picture, read trekking permits in Kerala.

  • Stay with your guide and on the marked route.
  • No alcohol, no plastic littering, no loud music.
  • Carry valid photo ID; it is usually checked at entry.
  • Treks can be cancelled by the forest department because of rain or wildlife movement.

What to carry

  • Trekking shoes with good grip (forest rock and roots get slippery)
  • At least 2 litres of water, plus electrolytes
  • Light, quick-dry full-length clothing; a rain jacket or poncho
  • Leech socks or salt during and just after the rains
  • Snacks, a cap, sunscreen and insect repellent
  • A small first-aid kit and any personal medicines
  • Photo ID and a dry bag for your phone
