You do not need to be an experienced trekker, but you should be comfortable with basic climbing, crawling and confined spaces. The cave can feel completely different from an outdoor trail. There is no open sky, the light disappears quickly and every sound feels closer.
For some people, that is the thrill. For someone with claustrophobia, it may be deeply uncomfortable.

Where is Odakolly Cave?
Odakolly Cave is located off the Chavaragiri–Odakolly Road, near Pulingome in the Cherupuzha region of Kannur district.
Payyanur is the nearest convenient railway station for most visitors. The cave is roughly 42 km from Payyanur and around 65–76 km from Kannur, depending on where you start and which road you take.
Public buses are available towards Cherupuzha and Pulingome, but the final stretch is easier with a private vehicle, taxi or pre-arranged local transport. Save the map location before the journey and speak to the guide about the final approach. Do not depend entirely on mobile connectivity in the last stretch.

How difficult is it?
The complete cave experience is best described as moderately challenging—not because of a long walking distance, but because of the way you have to move.

- Move through dark and narrow passages
- Follow instructions without rushing
A reasonably active beginner can consider it with a good guide. However, it may not be suitable for anyone with strong claustrophobia, poor balance, limited mobility or recent knee, back, ankle or shoulder injuries.
There is no clearly published minimum age for children. If you are visiting as a family, tell the operator the child’s age before booking. The easier section may be possible, but the complete route should not be treated like a normal family sightseeing attraction.
Is monsoon the best time to visit?
Monsoon gives Odakolly its most dramatic appearance. Water finds its way between the rocks, the surrounding landscape turns green and the cave feels more alive.
But the same rain that makes it beautiful can also make it risky. Wet rocks offer less grip, and water conditions inside can change after heavy rainfall. Never pressure a guide to continue if a section is closed or considered unsafe.
Post-monsoon may offer a better balance for first-time visitors: green surroundings, some water inside and potentially easier conditions. In the drier months, movement may be simpler, but the experience will look different.
There is no single perfect month. The best day is one when the weather is stable and the local team confirms that the route is safe.
What should you wear?
Wear clothes you do not mind getting wet or muddy. Quick-dry full-length trousers and a flexible T-shirt are better than jeans. Choose footwear with dependable grip on wet rock; smooth-soled shoes and sandals are a bad idea.
Carry a small water bottle, a waterproof pouch for your phone, a towel and a complete change of clothes. Keep your luggage outside or carry only a very small bag. Inside the cave, you will want both hands free.
A helmet is provided for the adventure. A reliable light is equally important inside the cave, so confirm the lighting arrangement and carry a small backup torch if possible.
A few things that really matter inside
Stay with the group and follow the person guiding you. Do not enter side passages or move ahead just to get a better photo. Keep some distance from the person climbing in front of you, and tell the guide immediately if you feel panicked, dizzy or uncomfortable.
Odakolly is a natural space, not an adventure set. Avoid touching bats or other wildlife. Do not scratch names onto the rocks, leave wrappers inside or remove anything from the cave. The aim is to experience the place without changing it.
Most importantly, never attempt the deeper sections without someone who knows the route.

Odakolly can be combined with other adventures around Cherupuzha, especially if you are travelling as a group.
Meenthulli Waterfalls is a seasonal stop in the region. Its appearance and accessibility depend on recent rain, and visitors should be especially careful around strong currents and slippery rocks.
Seasonal rafting on the Tejaswini River is another popular experience near Cherupuzha. It should always be done with trained river guides, proper life jackets and safety equipment.
Trying to fit the cave, waterfall and rafting into one day is possible with good planning, but do not rush one activity to reach the next. Weather and safety should decide the schedule.

Yes—if you are looking for something more immersive than a conventional tourist stop.
Odakolly does not offer a summit view or a neatly developed walkway. Its appeal lies in entering an unfamiliar natural space and moving through it slowly, one rock passage at a time. The darkness, water and confined sections make the experience feel genuinely adventurous without requiring a multi-day expedition.
It will not suit everyone, and that is fine. If narrow spaces make you anxious, choose the simpler visit or skip the cave. But if crawling through a natural passage sounds more exciting than uncomfortable, Odakolly deserves a place on your Kannur adventure list.
