Safrina Latheef Becomes First Keralite Woman to Summit Mount Everest

On May 18, at exactly 10:25 a.m. Nepal time, Safrina Latheef etched her name into history by becoming the first Kerala expat living in Qatar to conquer Mount Everest — the highest peak in the world at 8,848 meters. Her incredible feat came after an intense 20-hour climb through extreme cold, high winds, and oxygen-starved air.

A longtime resident of Doha since 2001, Safrina currently lives in Qatar with her husband, Dr. Shameel Musthafa, a surgeon at Hamad Medical Corporation, and their daughter, Minha. Her summit wasn’t a spur-of-the-moment adventure — it was the result of years of preparation, training, and passion for high-altitude mountaineering.
A Journey of Mountains and Milestones
Before Everest, Safrina had already built a formidable mountaineering résumé. She has successfully scaled Mount Kilimanjaro (5,895m) in Tanzania, Aconcagua (6,961m) in Argentina, and Mount Elbrus (5,642m) in Russia. She even trained on the icy slopes of Kazakhstan to prepare for the challenges that Everest would bring.
Her Everest expedition is more than a personal achievement — it’s a statement of resilience and determination that is now inspiring not just fellow Keralites, but expats and aspiring trekkers across the Gulf region and beyond.
An Inspiration Beyond Borders
Safrina’s historic summit sends a powerful message: that dreams have no borders, and courage knows no limits. Her success is a proud moment for the Kerala community and a beacon of inspiration for women mountaineers everywhere.
